Great barrier island is just off the coast of Auckland. (app. 90 km) Dave, one of Arie's friends was kind enough to fly us there in a chartered Piper Warrior.
The island was formed at the end of the last ice age. Since introduced pests and predators never made it to the island it is now a sanctuary for many native animals and plants endangered or extinct on the mainland.
Most of the island is a natural reserve. Photo moment!!!
After a walk through a beatiful forest with lots of tree ferns we arrived at the hot water pools for a rest and geothermal bathing in jurassic park style.
